Maple is the central community of Vaughan: a small historic village core surrounded by decades of newer subdivisions. It is a practical, family-oriented place to live, with two GO stations, City Hall and the hospital close by, and Highway 400 on its western edge.

Maple runs east from Highway 400, with Rutherford Road as its southern edge, and reaches north past Teston Road into countryside around the old hamlets of Teston and Hope. The village was settled in the 1850s and became part of Vaughan in the 1970s. Vaughan City Hall is on Major Mackenzie Drive, and the Maple Community Centre is on Keele Street.

Communities in Maple

Historic Maple

The old village is centred on Keele Street and Major Mackenzie Drive and is protected as the Maple Heritage Conservation District. Here you find older homes on mature lots, small local businesses and Maple GO, a station building from 1903 that is federally protected as a heritage railway station.

Around Rutherford GO

The southern part of Maple, near Rutherford Road and Keele Street, is built around Rutherford GO station. It is a mix of detached and semi-detached homes and townhomes, with newer townhome and condo projects close to the station. Metrolinx has finished major upgrades here, including more parking and a new underpass on Rutherford Road.

Subdivisions toward Teston Road

North of Major Mackenzie, newer subdivisions of detached homes and townhomes continue toward Teston Road. The newest phases sit at the edge of the countryside, which gives some streets open views and quick access to the trails and parks north of the city.

Patterson

East of Dufferin Street, between Highway 7 and Teston Road, is the community real estate boards call Patterson. Its southern half, Thornhill Woods, is usually thought of as Thornhill, while its northern streets are often compared with Maple by buyers looking at newer detached homes in central Vaughan.

Further north, beyond the newest streets, the countryside around Teston and Hope is still largely rural, which is part of the appeal for buyers who want a newer home near open space.

Landmarks nearby

Canada’s Wonderland opened in 1981 just west of Highway 400, and Vaughan Mills is at Highway 400 and Rutherford Road. Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital opened in 2021 at Jane Street and Major Mackenzie Drive, just across the highway from Maple. Eagles Nest Golf Club sits on the site of the former Keele Valley landfill, which closed in 2002.

Getting around Maple

  • GO train: Maple GO, north of Major Mackenzie Drive and east of Keele Street, and Rutherford GO, on Rutherford Road east of Keele, are both on the Barrie line with trains to Union Station. Metrolinx is upgrading the line for more frequent two-way service. At Maple GO, the work includes a new west platform, tunnels with elevators and a pedestrian bridge over Major Mackenzie Drive.
  • Highways: Highway 400 is on the western edge, and the 407 is a short drive south.
  • Subway and buses: York Region Transit routes connect Maple to the subway at Vaughan Metropolitan Centre and to Viva on Highway 7.

For many Maple households the GO train is what makes the location work. Our guide to commuting from York Region compares GO, subway and driving.

Buying, selling or renting in Maple

Maple suits buyers who want a newer home and a GO station within reach rather than the largest possible lot. The trade-off is usually between walking distance to Maple GO or Rutherford GO and a quieter street farther north. Freehold townhomes and semi-detached homes give buyers a way into the area below detached prices, and well-kept detached homes near schools and parks draw steady interest.

Inside the heritage district around Keele and Major Mackenzie, check what the district plan allows before you plan exterior changes. In the newer subdivisions, ask about the builder, the age of major systems and whether any phases nearby are still under construction.

If you are planning a move in or out of Maple, you can work with a Vaughan real estate team that knows each subdivision, starting with a home evaluation if you are selling.
