York Region is the band of municipalities directly north of Toronto: Vaughan, Markham and Richmond Hill along the city line, then Aurora, Newmarket, King, Whitchurch-Stouffville, East Gwillimbury and Georgina reaching up to Lake Simcoe. It is where a large share of GTA families end up when they want a newer house, a bigger lot and schools with a reputation.

Three GO lines (Barrie, Richmond Hill and Stouffville), the Line 1 subway terminus in Vaughan and the Viva rapid-transit network handle the commute; Highways 400, 404 and 407 handle the driving. The Oak Ridges Moraine runs across the middle of the region, which is why King, Aurora and north Richmond Hill feel rural minutes from the subdivisions.
