Whitby is the Durham town buyers pick for character. Downtown, at Brock and Dundas, is a Victorian main street with restaurants and independent shops; Port Whitby on the lake has the harbour, marina and waterfront trail; Brooklin, north of Highway 407, is a former village now surrounded by newer subdivisions. In between are the family neighbourhoods of the 1980s to 2000s: Williamsburg, Pringle Creek, Rolling Acres and Blue Grass Meadows.

Whitby GO on the Lakeshore East line is roughly 50 minutes to Union; the 401, 407 and 412 serve drivers. Trafalgar Castle School, the Abilities Centre and Lynde Shores Conservation Area are the local landmarks.
